To commemorate World Wetlands Day 2025, the Lekan Bakare Foundation (LBF) carried out a two-phase project in Ago-Egun, Makoko to raise awareness about wetland conservation and marine protection.

The first phase focused on street advocacy, as our team and volunteers, joined by the community’s princes, went around Ago-Egun to educate residents on the importance of keeping their environment clean, protecting marine life, and preserving wetlands.

The Lekan Bakare Foundation team in collaboration with Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) team, took to the streets of Iyana Ipaja Market with a powerful message: it’s time to stand for a sustainable future. Our mission was clear: raise awareness about the dangers of styrofoam pollution and empower citizens with practical knowledge on responsible waste disposal.

Street Advocacy at Ikotun Market, Lagos

Together with LAWMA Academy under the leadership of H.E., Muyiwa Gbadegesin, PhD and our dedicated Volunteers, we successfully carried out our Street Advocacy program at Ikotun Market. Our mission was to educate citizens on responsible waste disposal practices, empowering traders and commuters to maintain a clean environment. We emphasized the importance of properly bagging waste and placing it in covered containers for easy evacuation by licensed PSP Operators in Lagos State.

Street Advocacy at Oshodi Market, Lagos

Undeterred by the wet weather, our Street Advocacy recorded a thunderous success in the heart of Oshodi Market, one of the largest markets in the Lagos Metropolis.

With enthusiasm, our dedicated team, valued volunteers, and partner; LAWMA demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship by addressing the importance of effective and responsible waste disposal and highlighting the detrimental impact of styrofoam on our ecosystem.

Street Advocacy at Jakande Market, Lagos

The Street Advocacy initiative is a dynamic program aimed at tackling waste dumping in oceans and other water bodies, focusing on Nigeria’s six coastal areas and extending to other states.

This initiative educates traders, buyers, passersby, and local community members about recycling, effective waste management, environmental sustainability, and sustainable practices.

Street Advocacy at Ajah Market, Lagos

We had an incredible experience as we took to the bustling markets and streets of Ajah in Eti Osa East local government area for a Street Advocacy with a crucial message! We raised awareness on the pressing issue of styrofoam usage and talked about the significance of the recent ban by the Lagos State government. Styrofoam poses serious environmental threats, and it’s time we all take responsibility for our actions.

We also delved into the importance of responsible waste disposal and its direct impact on our environment. It’s not just about tossing trash away; it’s about safeguarding our planet for future generations.

Street Advocacy at Kado Fish Market, Abuja.

We initiated a meaningful mission at the Kado Fish Market in Abuja, devoting our day to spreading awareness about responsible waste disposal and management. Our primary objective was to educate the market community about the adverse effects of improper waste disposal on aquatic life.

 

In a world where environmental awareness holds great significance, we acknowledge the urgent need to address waste management issues, especially in places like the Kado Fish Market in Abuja.

As part of our Street Advocacy program, we collaborated with Ace Medics Foundation Doctors, in a training initiative to prepare for offering health and well-being support during the Street Advocacy program in Abuja.
