Makoko Fishermen Embrace Sustainable Practices on World Oceans Day

In a powerful show of community engagement, Lekan Bakare Foundation partnered with LASWA and key stakeholders on June 4 to bring World Oceans Day 2025 to Makoko’s Ago Egun fishermen community. Under the theme “Strengthening Community Compliance for Safer Waterways and Sustainable Fishing,” the outreach prioritized both safety and environmental stewardship.

Local experts from NIOMR, LASEPA, and the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture led interactive sessions, covering:

  • Best practices in sustainable fishing
  • Waterway safety protocols to reduce accidents
  • Marine waste management for cleaner waterways

As a key gesture, life jackets were distributed to boost safety during fishing and transit.

Why it matters:

  • Empowers coastal dwellers with practical tools and knowledge
  • Helps protect Lagos’s fragile inland marine ecosystems
  • Aligns local action with the UN’s global call for sustainable fishing

Looking Ahead:
Madly instituting planet-friendly practices, LBF is fostering steward communities ready for climate action. Stay tuned for more updates from our national #WorldOceansDay events.
