Lagos, Nigeria – The Lekan Bakare Foundation (LBF) joined millions across the world to commemorate the last Cleanup Day with an inspiring series of environmental activities across Lagos. Volunteers and partners of the Foundation turned out in large numbers for a coordinated cleanup exercise at Bariga, Ketu, and Elegushi Beach, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to protecting the planet and promoting sustainable living.
The event was more than just a cleanup—it was a movement for awareness and action. At Bariga and Ketu, teams of youths, residents, and LBF volunteers worked hand-in-hand to remove piles of waste from drainage channels, streets, and public spaces. At Elegushi Beach, the Foundation led a spirited coastal cleanup aimed at tackling the growing challenge of plastic pollution that threatens marine life.
One of the highlights of the day was the release of a rescued sea turtle back into the ocean. The sea turtle, which had been found entangled in marine debris earlier in the year, was rehabilitated under the Foundation’s conservation program. Its release symbolized hope for marine ecosystems and reinforced the need to reduce plastic waste along coastlines.
Speaking at the event, representatives of the Lekan Bakare Foundation expressed gratitude to volunteers, community members, and partners for their support. They emphasized that every cleanup action, no matter how small, contributes to building a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
The Cleanup Day celebration is part of the Foundation’s broader Blue Planet Initiative, which focuses on ocean and environmental conservation, climate action, and youth-led sustainability projects.
With growing momentum from this event, LBF reaffirmed its mission to lead more cleanups, empower communities, and champion policies that safeguard Nigeria’s natural ecosystems.
